Abstract

Forgiveness is an important section in interpersonal communication. The theme of forgiveness has its origins in philosophy, religion and theology. In psychology, this direction began to be studied rela- tively recently.

The article provides information about the study of the phenomenon of forgiveness in Russian psy- chology and the results of a pilot study on a Kazakhstani sample. The aim of the pilot study was to explore the relationship between forgiveness and personality among young people of 18-21 years. The sample consisted of 60 participants. As research methods questionnaire “Propensities for forgiveness and attitudes towards forgiving criminals” and Five-factor personality questionnaire were used.

The results showed that gender and personality are predictive aspects in occurrence of forgiveness. Of the five components of Big Five personality measures, only extraversion and compliance predicted forgiveness. There were also gender differences in consciousness and emotional stability, that were higher among girls rather than boys. Moreover, extraversion, complaisance, conscientiousness, stable stability, and openness showed different correlations between male and female young people’s assess- ments of forgiveness.

The obtained data has theoretical and practical value for the study of the phenomenon of forgive- ness, as an individual construct that helps to grow, develop and set new goals in relation to life, self, and one’s partner. This suggests that future research should focus on the influence of psychological factors

on the propensity for forgiveness together with attitude towards forgiveness and explore more effective methods of influence.

Key words: psychology of forgiveness, offence, repentance, interpersonal communication, moral aspect of forgiving, the forgiving, the forgiven.
